July 20, 1969, the human race accomplished its single greatest technological achievement of all time when a human first set foot on the Moon.
Neil.A. Armstrong took the “Small Step” into our greater future when he stepped off the Lunar Module, “Eagle,” onto the surface of the Moon.
The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It was the fifth human spaceflight of Project Apollo and the third human voyage to the Moon.
A Saturn V launched Apollo 11 from the Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969
It carried Mission Commander Neil Alden Armstrong , Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene Buzz Aldrin.
On July 20, 1969 the lunar module Eagle separated from the command module Columbia.
Armstrong stepped off Eagle's footpad and into history , famously describing it as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
He was shortly joined by “Buzz” Aldrin .
The astronauts carried out the planned sequence of activities that included deployment of a Solar Wind Composition experiment, collection of a larger sample of lunar material, panoramic photographs of the region near the landing site and the lunar horizon, closeup photographs of in place lunar surface material, deployment of a Laser-Ranging Retroreflector and a Passive Seismic experiment.
They spent 21 hours on the lunar surface and returned 21.7 kilograms of lunar rocks. After their historic walks on the Moon, they successfully docked with the Command Module “Columbia,” in which Michael Collins was patiently orbiting the cold but no longer lifeless Moon.
What was Apollo expeditions to the Mankind ?
Surely it was a technological leap . Apollo marked man's evolution into the solar system, paced only by his intellect and collective will.
